At the center of the enchanting rolling hills, lived a young shepherd. His existence was essentially pure, and unsophisticated. His main role was mainly to tend to his herd of rams.
Their low murmuring and the whispering read more of the gales across the lone tree on the hilltop were his constant co-dwellers. Day upon day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
But, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. During one such occasion out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plot.
Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One day he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick persisted for a couple of more days. However, one day, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is tough to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
